San Francisco school board seeking approval for hundreds of preliminary layoff notices: Here's why

On Tuesday, San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) Superintendent Dr. Maria Su announced that over 500 staff members could receive preliminary layoff notices in the coming weeks, as reported by CBS News. The layoffs aim to address a $113 million budget deficit for the 2025-26 school year The San Francisco Board of Education will discuss approving notices for 395 certified positions and 164 classified positions. Before issuing layoffs, the board will process resignations, retirements, and leave requests. The Human Resources Department will then use a seniority list and other criteria to determine affected employees, as reported by CBS News.
The final decision is expected in the coming months. The superintendent says the district’s workforce represents 80% of expenses, so layoffs are necessary, as reported by abc7news.
By state law, preliminary layoff notices must be issued by March 15 to those who may be affected. However, since the district’s financial situation remains uncertain, the number of preliminary notices issued may exceed the actual final layoffs, CBS News reports.
According to The San Francisco Standard, the Board of Education will vote Tuesday night on approving the preliminary layoff notices, which will go out to affected employees in the next few weeks. The final decision about layoffs will be made in May.
If approved, the layoffs could have a significant impact on school operations and staffing levels.
