On Monday, a misunderstanding sparked panic at Muskingum University following reports of a possible active shooter on campus. However, the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that the report was unfounded, and no one was harmed, according to a media report.
In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office initially warned, “We have reports of a possible shooter at Muskingum College. Law enforcement is on the scene. Please avoid the area as the scene is still unsecured.”

The incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between two college students earlier in the day. While the argument did not involve any violence, a staff member overheard students discussing a gun and a hostage situation around 6:30 p.m., leading to a 911 call. After investigating, deputies determined the conversation was about the earlier dispute, and there was no real threat, reports aba6.
The chaos unfolded near Patton Hall, causing fear and confusion among students and faculty.
This is not the first time Muskingum University has faced a security scare. In March 2023, a gun violence incident occurred on campus after a baseball game, resulting in an individual being charged with 14 felony counts, as reported by Times Recorder.
The false alarm highlights growing concerns over campus safety in the U.S., with universities increasingly on edge due to past incidents of gun violence.
